In the National Diversity Awards 2013, Tina Lannin of 121 captions came 2nd out of 4500 entrants. Congratulations to Tina on her fantastic achievements. Tina Lannin set up 121 Captions (www.121captions.com) to help other deaf people like herself to obtain better access to information and services through high quality communication support and training courses aimed at inclusion and empowerment. Tina is an experienced deaf awareness trainer, lipreading teacher, and forensic lipreader. 121 Captions was the first agency to bring remote speech-to-text and remote captions to the UK in 2009, making captioning much more accessible to consumers. 121 Captions has been used to cover many National events such as the Royal Wedding, the Olympics and also events in other countries. There are many articles of interest in the deaf newspaper on this website in addition to the information provided.
On 17th September 2013 Gloria McGregor was a guest speaker at the opening ceremony of the new semester at He University, Shenyang, China. This new and private university and its associated science park is headed by Professor Wei He who in addition has created the He Eye Care System which encompasses a central eye hospital, 7 satellite eye hospitals and more than 50 vision centers in Liaoning province. Professor He is the most amazing man with enthusiasm, energy and an international reputation who is dedicated to solving the problems of those who have eye impairments in China. Most of the university students are studying treatment of the eye, studies range from nursing through to those studying to be ophthalmic surgeons and optometrists. In addition, He University also provides degree education in Pharmacy, Arts, Biomedicine, Public Health, etc. Her brief was to give an inspirational talk to 2000 new students including overcoming adversities and helping others. In recognition of her qualifications and achievements she was awarded the status of visiting professor. It was an amazing honour and experience. There were visiting guests from Italy, Japan, Holland and China who gave speeches or presentations on the fusion of art and science, neurology and the use of art and related sciences to treat various medical conditions. The students cannot fail to be impressed by the welcome they received from Prof Wei and his staff and by their dedication and the excellent university facilities. They deserve best wishes for their future success
